Sink into a pile of orange leaves
A soft place to land
In this issue: A short and weird story, a great read, a weird gem, a new bonus episode, a visit with Louise the cat, and a classic song.
Story for the strange times
“Oh Bondage, Up Yours” is a story from my first collection, Dig Me Out. Read it for one of my favorite characters I’ve created:
Reading now
I’ll be talking soon to the wonderful Chuy Renteria for a future Art of Resistance episode, so I’m reading his memoir. And it’s a fascinating look at growing up in West Liberty, Iowa, the small town often known for a meatpacking plant and a large immigrant population. Chuy dissects some of the complexities around growing up with immigrant parents, facing the pressures of a white-small-town-society, and how break-dancing gave him a creative outlet and future career. He’s an excellent storyteller, and the book is a must-read.
A weird gem
I’m rediscovering so many old SNL clips from listening to the Seth Meyers and Lonely Island podcast. Here’s one that spoke my “Lost Boys”-loving inner child.
New bonus - Fighting the Sacklers
The first bonus from Art of Resistance is a short look at a modern artist resisting: Nan Goldin and P.A.I.N. fighting the art-washing by the Sacklers. Badass.
CATS
Because you need them for your mental health. Here’s a recent call-and-response with Louise.
A song to groove to
